SPORTS: Shorunmu plays down Enyeama’s error
Super Eagles goalkeepers’ trainer, Ike Shorunmu, has exonerated Vincent Enyeama after Nigeria were forced to a draw by Liberia in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier played in Monrovia on Saturday.
Enyeama reportedly bungled a shot that gave Liberia’s Sekou Oliseh the opportunity to equalise for the hosts in the second half of the game.
Shorunmu, a former Eagles goalkeeper, said the Israel-based shot stopper only had a bad dayon the pitch on Saturday.
“It is not fair if we continue to say Enyeama was the cause of the goal. It was a team game so everybody will take part of the blame,” Shorunmu said.
“Any player can have good days and bad days, it was Enyeama’s bad day but that doesn’t make him a bad goalkeeper. His quality is not in doubt.”
Shorunmu admitted the Liberians were way better than the last time they met in a friendly earlier in the year but insisted it would be a different story in the second leg tie in Calabar next month.
He said, “The friendly cannot be compared to the Saturday game. Unlike in the friendly where all the players were from their domestic league, the Lone Star had a bout eight foreign-based professionals in the squad on Saturday.
“We learnt some valuable lessons in the qualifier and we’re going to put some things differently in the next game. We won’t reveal our strategy until the game in October.”
